The house is located above Kalk Bay Harbour, with views to Simon’s Town. A posive response to the incredible context and maximum energy efficeincy are the main driving forces informing this design. Being located close to the mountain, the sun disappears very early in winter.
The sun room, attached to the back of the house, is designed act as sun trap, with its dark floors absorbing as much heat as possible during its short exposure to the sun. The top floor has windows at floor level, with a concrete shelf surround with dark tiles again absorbing heat. The remainder of the floor of this level, not directly exposed to the sun, is timber.
In addition to a solar geyser, the house is also wired for a photo voltaic system and rain water is collected for irrigation.
